He could not read a word in any language. So he built one his whole nation could read.
Around 1809, a Cherokee silversmith and blacksmith named Sequoyah began working out how to put spoken Cherokee onto paper. He had no schooling and could not read English. He worked at it for twelve years, through the ridicule of neighbours who thought it a waste and the objection of a wife who thought it worse. When he finished in 1821, he had eighty-six characters — one for every syllable in the language.
When he and his young daughter first demonstrated it, they were accused of witchcraft and put on trial. The warriors judging them separated father and daughter and made them pass written messages back and forth. The messages came back correct every time. The charge collapsed. Within months, thousands of Cherokee could read and write their own language.
It stands among the very few times in recorded history that one member of a people without writing sat down and built an original, working script — and saw his whole nation take it up.
The back of this shirt is that syllabary. All eighty-six characters, set out as a chart — thirteen consonant rows across six vowel columns, exactly the way it is taught and still written today. Not decoration, not a motif: the actual document, printed large enough to read. The front carries his name and the year.

Sequoyah died in 1843 at San Fernando in Coahuila, Mexico, on a journey to find Cherokee bands who had gone south and persuade them to come home. The script he left behind outlived him: it is co-official with English in the Cherokee Nation, it is taught in schools there, and it is on the street signs.
A note on the count: Sequoyah finished with eighty-six characters in 1821. One of them, Ᏽ (mv), fell out of everyday writing and most modern charts show eighty-five — though the Cherokee Nation still carries it on its current teaching chart. This shirt shows the full eighty-six, laid out the way the syllabary is taught today, with the row labels used on the Cherokee Nation's own chart.
