Why an ancestor portrait
Why an ancestor portrait
Most families have no painting of the people they came from. Photographs start in the 1860s and stop at the edge of the reservation; the generations before that were never sat in front of a canvas.
This portrait fills that gap on purpose. You choose the nation, upload one photo of the person you want honoured, and their face is painted into a scene drawn from that nation’s homeland and dress. It hangs on your wall as the picture that was never taken.
Descendants order it for a parent or grandparent. Allies order it with, and for, the Native people in their lives. Either way it is a portrait of a real person, made to be kept.
Display, handling & care
Display, handling & care
Your canvas ships rolled in a protective tube. Unroll it on a flat surface and let it rest for a few hours; it relaxes flat on its own. Light books on the corners help if needed.
Framing: every size is printed with a plain border on all four sides, so it fits a standard 4:5 frame with room to spare. A frame with glass or UV acrylic protects the print long-term.
Handling: hold by the edges; keep the printed surface away from bare hands, moisture and direct sun.

Photographs stop at the edge of the reservation. This starts where they stop.
For most Native families the picture record begins late and thin: a few studio photographs, a boarding-school group shot, a face in a crowd. The generations before that were never painted.
This portrait puts one real person back into that frame. Their face, in the dress and homeland of their nation, in the style of the painters who were working while their great-grandparents were alive.
One approved painting per nation. Your face painted in.
Each nation starts from a single painting: the rider, the horse, the clothing and the landscape are fixed, so every portrait sits in the same composition. Your photo changes only the face, and keeps the age, the lines and the grey.
We review every print before it ships. If the likeness is not right, we repaint it or reprint it at no cost.

What kind of photo works best?
What kind of photo works best?
One face, looking roughly at the camera, in decent light. A phone snapshot is fine. Avoid sunglasses, hats that shadow the eyes, and group shots.
The portrait keeps the age in the photo: lines, grey hair and all. If you want a younger version of someone, send a younger photo.
