What inspired each design
Five designs, one road west
In 1838, U.S. troops and state militia forced more than 16,000 Cherokee people from their homelands in Tennessee, Alabama, North Carolina and Georgia. Many traveled west through the fall and winter.National Park Service, Trail of Tears National Historic Trail, History & Culture (nps.gov/trte)
These designs are inspired by that road. Each one draws on a piece of it in the printed beadwork.
Rose Along the Trail
White Cherokee roses climb the vest beside a trail of small footprints, on deep oxblood.
In a legend still told today, a white rose grew wherever the mothers’ tears fell on the trail.
Winter Pines
Snow-covered pines under a pale moon, on moss green.
Many of the families were still on the road west through the fall and winter.
Water Route
Turquoise river beadwork with small canoes, on warm saddle brown.
Some groups were sent west by river instead of over land.
Every Step Remembered
White Cherokee roses and seven-point star conchos, footprints down the sleeves, on dark slate.
For the long road west, traveled by people who did not choose it.

Seven-point stars on rust and gold beadwork, turquoise conchos, on navy.
The seven-point star is often linked to the seven Cherokee clans.
